Skin Clarity: Cosmeceutical Skincare

I started working full time in the beauty industry in 2003, originally training as a nail technician, then adding a range of complimentary and holistic therapies. However, the whole time, my skin was a source of embarrassment to me. In 2009/2010, I realised I could not face the prospect of still suffering with acne (which had plagued me since the onset of puberty) into my 30s; so I booked in with a dermatologist and discovered AHAs. It is no exaggeration to say this was life-changing.

In 2017, I became aware of a South African cosmeceutical skincare brand who were trying to expand into the UK market. I watched with interest as a respected colleague and fellow beauty lecturer, who also suffered with acne, took on the system and saw results within 3 weeks. In the months the followed, I watched her skin transform, and in 2018 I joined her: first by starting to use Nimue on my own skin, then by flying out to Dublin in 2019 to qualify to teach for the brand.

I offer a range of Nimue skincare treatments, including advanced treatments (such as skin peels), but what I love most is the results that can be achieved for all different skin classifications, simply by using the products at home.

Free Consultation

Book a free skin consultation, where I will ask about your current regime, medications, allergies, lifestyle, and what you would like to achieve. I will cleanse and examine your skin under a daylight lamp, before putting together a bespoke product and treatment prescription, taking into account any demands on your time and your available budget. Please allow 20-30 minutes for this consultation.

Kindly note:

  • If you are booking a skincare treatment, you do not need to book a consultation separately, as consultation time is incorporated into every treatment.

  • Products are available that can be used from 10 years of age. A parent or guardian must be present at all times with clients under the age of 16 years.

  • My advice does not replace that given to you by a medical professional and I will never advise you to discontinue a medical product that has been prescribed to you. In the event that you feel a prescribed skin medication is not working for you, please seek your doctor’s advice before discontinuing it and trying a new skincare treatment or regimen.

Frequently asked questions

What is cosmeceutical skincare?

According to the FDA, there are three categories of product on the market for skin: cosmetic products (which can be bought online and on the high street), medical products (which can only be prescribed by a doctor) and cosmeceutical products (which are stronger than cosmetic, but not enough to be classed as medical).

Cosmeceutical brands are only available to purchase through a trained skincare professional via a face to face consultation in a salon or clinic. For a product to fit into this category, it has to physically change the skin, rather than just improve its appearance. This could include controlling sebaceous gland activity, stimulating collagen production, reducing melanin production etc.

Why Nimue? Will it work for me? And what will it cost?

I chose to work with Nimue because the products will penetrate the skin on their own, without the need for electrical machines. This makes it easier for my clients to see results quickly, just by using the products at home.

As to whether Nimue will work for you, this depends. There are many factors that contribute to abnormal skin functioning and using the incorrect products is just one of them. To help me prescribe products appropriately, please bring your current skincare with you to your consultation.

Cost-wise, every client’s treatment plan differs. Many start using the products at home (approx £25-£35 per month) and are thrilled with the results. Others may wish to add in-salon treatments (£25-£100 per session) to boost results. Treatment plans and costs are explained during your no-obligation consultation.

How long before I see results?

Nimue starts at Phase 1: the use of cleanser, conditioner, day cream or night cream and SPF (yes, all seasons, during daylight hours). Phase 1 lasts 4 weeks and clients typically see at least 30% improvement during this time.

Next up is Phase 2: after the initial 4 weeks, one additional product is introduced: this is applied every second evening, under the night cream. There is typically an additional 20% improvement over 2-4 weeks during Phase 2. About 90% of clients are happy to continue to care for their skin at home, but for those wanting to maximise their results, professional peels and/or micro-needling treatments are available.

I have sensitive skin. Can I start using Nimue?

Absolutely, but we will need to address the sensitivity before treating any other concerns e.g. acne or wrinkles. It will take longer to see results, but the Nimue Interactive range is designed specifically to support a sensitive skin type through this process.

  • "Oh my word, Gemma... that YSkin Active Blemish Control is magic in a tube! I have spent a fortune on spot treatments in the past, but NOTHING has shrunk a spot as fast as this!"

    SS, Nimue Retail Product Customer

  • "Look at my skin! I can't believe it. I cried at my first appointment (when we talked about my acne) and I cried again this morning - happy tears this time."

  • "I have done as I was told and have used the spray on my face twice a day. I was skeptical, but even after one use I could feel it was less itchy and sore. The redness went quickly too, like you said. My wife used it on a burn too - we are both seriously impressed by Hypo21."
